This computer was manufactured by Philips from 1984 to 1986. It was intended for the French market, so it has an AZERTY keyboard and not QWERTY, as we are used to seeing them. It is equipped with 24 KB of RAM, although in reality only 16 are intended for the program and 8 for video memory. In addition, it has 18 KB ROM.
The Philips VG5000, sometimes also called VG5K, is not an MSX-compatible computer, so it needs specific software. However, you can find, on the internet, emulators and software in abundance!

As I said before, together with the computer, I also bought a Philips VG-0022 power supply that allows me to power both the VG5000 and the VG8010, an MSX computer that I own in collection. Quando si tratta di computer vintage, la prima cosa che faccio è verificare le tensioni di alimentazione dell'alimentatore, perché, se un alimentatore fosse danneggiato e desse una tensione sbagliata, potrebbe danneggiare l'elettronica del computer.
La piedinatura del connettore dell'alimentatore è di seguito riportata ed è vista dal lato delle saldature del connettore, oppure dal retro del computer. Per fare la prova delle tensioni dal lato dei contatti del connettore DIN, bisogna considerare la disposizione dei piedini a specchio.
Per fortuna, le tensioni dell'alimentatore sono corrette.

Una volta verificate le tensioni di alimentazione, ho collegato il VG5000 al monitor per vedere se funziona. Fortunatamente, il venditore, su eBay, aveva dichiarato il vero: il computer è testato e funzionante. Per collegare il Philips VG-5000 occorre un cavo video da DIN a SCART. Non posso usare quello del Philips VG8010, perché quel modello ha un'uscita video composita, mentre il VG5000 ha un'uscita RGB.

La prima prova con il TV LG nero non è andata bene... il televisore non è perfettamente compatibile e, di tanto in tanto, mostra delle schermate distorte. Per questo, ho collegato un secondo televisore, Sharp LC20, che mostra una schermata perfetta.
In short, not all LCD TVs are compatible with our vintage computers!
