Online fuel consumption converter

To get started, enter the vehicle fuel consumption in any of the four available units. The converter automatically calculates the other units. You can use either a comma or a period as the decimal separator. However, do not use thousands separators.

Vehicle fuel consumption

Enter a value in any unit. The converter automatically calculates the other three.

Optional vehicle and fuel data

You can leave the fuel price, tank capacity, and fuel type blank. The calculator uses the fuel type to estimate CO₂ emissions. If you leave a field blank, the calculator omits only the results that depend on that value.

Actual fuel consumption calculation

Enter the kilometers traveled and the liters actually consumed.

Actual fuel consumption (l/100 km)
Actual fuel consumption (km/l)
Actual fuel consumption (mpg US)
Actual fuel consumption (mpg UK)
Fuel cost (€)
Cost per kilometer (€/km)
Cost per 100 kilometers (€/100 km)
Emissions from fuel consumed (kg CO₂)

Fuel required for a trip

This calculation uses the vehicle fuel consumption entered in the main converter.

Fuel required (l)
Trip cost (€)
Cost per kilometer (€/km)
Cost per 100 kilometers (€/100 km)
Trip emissions (kg CO₂)

Range calculation

Enter the amount of fuel available. If you also entered the tank capacity, the calculator automatically shows the range with a full tank.

Range (km)
Emissions from available fuel (kg CO₂)
Range with a full tank (km)
Cost of a full tank (€)
Full-tank emissions (kg CO₂)

Range with a given budget

This calculation requires the fuel price and vehicle fuel consumption.

Fuel available with budget (l)
Range with budget (km)
Fuel emissions (kg CO₂)

Annual fuel consumption and cost

Enter the annual mileage. The calculation uses the vehicle fuel consumption and, when available, the fuel price and fuel type.

How the fuel consumption converter works

Fuel consumption can be expressed in several ways. In many European countries, it is commonly expressed as the liters needed to travel 100 kilometers. Alternatively, you can indicate how many kilometers the vehicle travels per liter of fuel.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, fuel economy is often expressed in miles per gallon. However, the value depends on the type of gallon. For this reason, the calculator keeps mpg US and mpg UK separate.

Liters per 100 kilometers and kilometers per liter

Liters per 100 kilometers indicate the amount of fuel needed to travel 100 kilometers. Therefore, a lower value means lower fuel consumption.

Kilometers per liter indicate the distance that can be traveled with one liter of fuel. In this case, a higher value means lower fuel consumption.

To convert between these two units, the calculator divides 100 by the known value.

Difference between mpg US and mpg UK

Miles per gallon indicates how many miles a vehicle can travel on one gallon of fuel. However, the US gallon and the Imperial gallon have different volumes.

One US gallon equals 3.785411784 liters, while one Imperial gallon equals 4.54609 liters. Therefore, the same fuel consumption produces different values in mpg US and mpg UK.

Therefore, the converter keeps the two systems separate to avoid ambiguity.

Calculate actual vehicle fuel consumption

You can calculate actual fuel consumption from the distance traveled and the amount of fuel actually used. The calculator shows the result in l/100 km, km/l, mpg US, and mpg UK at the same time.

For a reliable result, measure fuel consumption over a sufficiently long distance and use accurate refueling data.

In addition, if you enter the fuel price, the calculator determines the total cost, cost per kilometer, and cost per 100 kilometers. If you select the fuel type, it also estimates the CO₂ emissions associated with the liters actually consumed.

Warning: the actual fuel consumption values are not automatically used in the calculations below. The following sections continue to use the vehicle fuel consumption entered in the main converter at the top of the table.

Calculate the fuel required for a trip

Based on the vehicle fuel consumption and the distance to travel, you can calculate how many liters of fuel the trip requires.

In addition, if you enter the fuel price, the calculator determines the total cost, cost per kilometer, and cost per 100 kilometers. If you select the fuel type, it also estimates the amount of CO₂ produced by the required fuel.

The result is a theoretical estimate. Actual fuel consumption can vary depending on speed, traffic, route, temperature, tires, vehicle load, and driving style.

Calculate vehicle range

Using the vehicle fuel consumption and the liters of fuel available, you can estimate the distance the vehicle can travel before running out of fuel.

In addition, if you enter the tank capacity, the calculator shows the theoretical range with a full tank. If you enter the fuel price, it also calculates the theoretical cost of a full tank. Finally, selecting the fuel type provides an estimate of the emissions associated with the available fuel and a full tank.

Calculate range with a given budget

By entering the available budget, fuel price, and vehicle fuel consumption, you can calculate how many liters you can buy and how many kilometers you can travel.

This lets you quickly estimate the range available for a given amount of money. In addition, if you select the fuel type, the calculator estimates the CO₂ produced by the amount of fuel you can buy.

Calculate annual fuel consumption and cost

Using the annual mileage and vehicle fuel consumption, the calculator determines the amount of fuel required in one year.

In addition, if you enter the fuel price, you get the annual cost, average monthly cost, and average cost per kilometer. If you select the fuel type, the calculator also estimates annual CO₂ emissions in kilograms and metric tons.

CO₂ emissions calculation

The calculator estimates CO₂ emissions directly from the amount of fuel consumed. To perform the calculation, select the fuel type. The calculator multiplies the liters used or estimated by a conventional emission factor.

For this estimate, the calculator uses approximately 2.33 kg CO₂/l for gasoline, 2.64 kg CO₂/l for diesel, and 1.629 kg CO₂/l for LPG.

Fuel type is optional. Therefore, if you do not select one, all other calculations continue to work normally and the calculator does not show CO₂ results.

The estimate only covers the CO₂ produced by fuel combustion. It does not include emissions associated with extraction, production, refining, transportation, and distribution. In addition, the factors are conventional values and can vary slightly depending on the actual fuel composition.

Units available in the converter

The converter supports Liters per 100 kilometers (l/100 km), Kilometers per liter (km/l), Miles per US gallon (mpg US), and Miles per Imperial gallon (mpg UK).

In addition, the calculations use Kilometers (km), Liters (l), Euros (€), Euros per liter (€/l), Euros per kilometer (€/km), Euros per 100 kilometers (€/100 km), Kilograms of CO₂ (kg CO₂), and Metric tons of CO₂ (t CO₂).
